Two more people were killed on Monday night when masked gunmen went on a shooting rampage at a bar in Majengo area of Mombasa.
Several other patrons were admitted to hospital with gunshot wounds following the attack which comes barely 24 hours after a similar incident that occurred in Likoni at the weekend.
Mombasa County Commander Robert Kitur said that they are investigating if the attacks were perpetrated by the same group which also dropped leaflets in the initial Likoni attack.
“Several people were also injured in the incident when the masked men raided the bar and started shooting randomly around midnight. The injured have been rushed to Coast Provincial General Hospital,” he stated.
Kitur further urged the public to work closely with the police and volunteer any information to enable police find the perpetrators.
He said they were still hunting gunmen who killed four people in an apparent ethnic revenge attack at Likoni at the weekend.
Kitur said four people were killed when gunmen on motorbikes sprayed bullets into crowds late Sunday in the Soweto village of Likoni suburb, although local government officials confirmed only three dead.
The leaflets, which said the shooting was carried out in retaliation for attacks last month, appear to be a move to inflame ethnic tensions further on Kenya’s already volatile coast.
Kenya faces multiple challenges, including an external Islamist threat, home-grown terrorism, religious, ethnic and tribal tensions, and bitter, long-running land disputes.
At least 94 people have been killed in a series of raids since mid-June around Kenya’s Lamu coastal district, about 300 kilometres north of Mombasa.
Somalia’s Al-Qaeda-linked Shabaab have previously claimed responsibility for a string of shootings on Kenya’s Muslim-majority coast, in retaliation for Kenya’s military intervention in Somalia.
But they denied they were to blame for the shooting late Sunday.
