Champions Gor Mahia take on Tusker Premier League leaders Tusker at the City Stadium Wednesday afternoon in a potentially explosive encounter.
Gor are just coming from a 2-0 hiding in Nakuru at the hands of lowly Top Fry while Tusker have had a blistering start to the season. The brewers have so far managed four wins and a draw. They are yet to lose a match and Gor will have to be at their best to beat Francis Kimanzi’s charges.
Gor’s Ugandan left back Godfrey Walusimbi, aware of the huge expectations from their adoring fans, has asked his team mates to give it their all. “The weekend loss to Top Fry does not put us off track. We have to do our best today and beat them (Tusker). We have many injuries in defence that at times affect the combination but whoever is picked should do the job,” said the creative left back who has been one of the stand-out performers since joining Gor in January.
Vice-captain David ‘Calabar’ Owino is a doubt while utility defender Musa Mohamed will not feature as he is away in South Africa on trials but Walusimbi expects the rest of the defenders to erect a strong human wall against Tusker’s lethal forwards.
Gor lie sixth on the table and victory will catapult them to joint top with the brewers who are on 13 points but will open up a four point gap over second placed Chemelil Sugar (on 12 points) in case of a win.
Kimanzi’s side has shown all the attributes of a title challenging squad. They have been compact in all departments and the fine form of play maker Kevin Kimani and Clifford Alwanga - the former KCB man who has been integral to their campaign so far - will be crucial.
At Tusker, Alwanga has been flourishing as the main target man, a stark contrast to the number 10 role he enjoyed at his former club and he is the deadly weapon that Kimanzi could unleash on Gor.
