Police investigating Sonko, Shebesh night gun drama

Police are currently investigating a shooting incident that occurred at a popular night clubbing joint in Nairobi on Saturday night.

Senator Mike Sonko and Woman Representative Racheal Shebesh were said to have met at the bar with their supporters. A confrontation was reported to have ensued after the Women Representative, Racheal Shebesh walked up to the Nairobi Senator, Mike Sonko and demanded to know why she was following her "wherever she went". The body guards of the two leaders shot in the air reportedly to end the confrontation.

“There was a commotion that was followed by gun fire into the air, scaring patrons,” a police officer said, quoting witnesses at the popular club in Kilimani. However, no casualties were reported during the incident.

Police have said that they have opened investigations into the incident so as to question the two leaders and their security personnel over the matter.

Kilimani divisional CID chief George Ojuka said both leaders had been summoned to record statements on Sunday.

“We understand the two leaders had an exchange before someone shot in the air,” Ojuka said, “the use of the firearm was unwarranted because no one was in any danger.”

He also said they were investigating the issues behind the incident and that they would take appropriate action against those found guilty of an offence.

The Women Representative, Rachael Shebesh, could not be reached for comment over the matter as her phone went unanswered. When reached for comment, Sonko said he was having a meal with his supporters and friends at the club when the incident occurred. He also alleged to have reported the matter to the police before coming back to the club.

Before the incident, Sonko was said to have posted a message on Facebook saying, "Watu wangu my life is in danger. I’m just from a funeral of my late family’s driver who’s been laid to rest at his family home a few hours ago. After delivering my speech I told the people who escorted me to the funeral to meet me at my usual joint for thanks giving dinner but I’m shocked to find a politician well known to me with his/her 30 people who keep on shouting and threatening me but all the same I am playing it cool."

It is believed this is the post that angered Shebesh’s supporters leading to the fracas.
