How Lamu attackers chose their victims

Attackers who butchered more than10 men at Hindi killed their victims depending on their ages.

According to eyewitnesses, they killed men because they will one day join the military, go to Somalia to kill and rape their women.

“They removed girls’ trousers to check their genitals and establish if indeed they are females,” said a resident of Hindi Kibiboni, Ms Margeret Wanjohi.

This was a departure from the approach the raiders used in Mpeketoni two weeks ago in which 56 people were killed.

During the Mpeketoni incident, witnesses said the attackers mainly targeted men who could not recite a verse in the Holy Quran.

In the Saturday night raid, witnesses and survivors said that the gunmen either picked their victims from their homesteads or while walking on footpaths and ordered them to take them around as they caused havoc. The hostages were eventually killed using knives. Their throats were slit. The victims’ hands were tied at the back and those who resisted had their legs bound too.

Witnesses said the attackers used ropes to tie their victims. Those who survived said that there was blood splattered everywhere.

Two men — including one who was disabled — who locked themselves up in their houses also faced the wrath of the killers.

Mr Stephen Gichuhi and a disabled man were burnt beyond recognition in their houses when they refused to come out.

“When they declined to get out of their houses, I heard the attackers saying that they had chosen death by fire. Within no time, the houses went up in flames. That is how callous they were,” said a resident.
