President Uhuru asked to earn his respect

30 Jul 2014

President Uhuru Kenyatta was on Sunday criticised for demanding respect from the opposition without working to earn it.

Speaking on the campaign trail at Mathare, Mr Wetang’ula tore at the Jubilee Government, for failing Kenyans and singled out the security contract awarded to Safaricom, laptops for primary one pupils and corruption riddled standard gauge railway tenders as example administration failures.

“We want to tell the President that you cannot be respected if you condone corruption and fail to provide security in the country. Respect is earned not demanded,” he said.

The Bungoma Senator also asked Cord affiliated MPs and MCAs to step out in the fight against social injustice even as he pleaded with Mathare residents to vote for Mr Kariuki, the ODM candidate to bury tribalism.

Speaking at the same venue, Mr Kalonzo said they were planning to collect over 5 million signatures during the referendum adding that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had to be disbanded for colluding to rig elections.

He also demanded that the national government should allocate 40 per cent of its revenue to county governments.

“We want to collect even up to seven or 10 million signatures for the referendum,” said Mr Musyoka.

Mr Odinga also asked the Head of State to earn his respect instead of going round touting and lamenting that the opposition did not respect him.

“I respect him and I also respected the court’s decision (on the presidential petition at the Supreme Court). The President should stop demanding that I respect him, he should earn his respect,” said Mr Odinga who also called upon Mathare voters to come out in large numbers and vote for Mr Kariuki in the August 7 mini-poll.
