Two Australian tourists died Sunday afternoon while another 23 sustained serious injuries when a vehicle they travelling in hit a guardrail before rolling multiple times in Narok County.
The accident occurred near Eor Ekule Trading centre along the busy Narok-Mai Mahiu highway, barely three kilometres from the Pinyiny black spot area where 41 people perished in August last year.
Narok County Administration Police Commandant Paul Kerich reported that one tourist died on the spot while the other succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at Narok County Referral Hospital. He also said that one tourist in critical condition had been transferred to Nairobi for specialized treatment.
The other 22 were admitted to the hospital where doctors have said they are responding well to treatment.
Kerich blamed the accident on a rear tyre burst that caused the driver to lose control and hit a guardrail before rolling several times and plunging into a river.
The tourists were reportedly headed to Tanzania through Maasai Mara Game Reserve from Nairobi to witness the annual wildebeest migration.
Andrew Mungatana, the National Vice Chairman of the of Kenya Tourists Drivers and Guides Association, urged tour drivers to observe traffic rules.
