Multiple explosions rock Kenya's coastal city

3 May 2014

The death toll from two explosions in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa has now risen to four.

One of the blasts blew up a public transport bus belonging to the Chania Travellers fleet plying the Thika-Mombasa-Malindi route. The explosion went off as it came to a stop at along Kenyatta Avenue in Mwembe Tayari. The bus had just arrived from Nairobi. Another bus, parked close by and which is owned by the Sharter Link fleet, also took a hit from the blast on its rear side. Explosives are believed to have been thrown at the bus by a suspect at the bus terminal.

A military officer indicated that a passenger had allegedly boarded the bus armed with a grenade.

A second explosion was reported near Reef Hotel in Nyali. Luckily, no one was reported harmed in the second explosion.

A third explosion was believed to have been planned for a nearby cinema complex but it was thwarted before the terror operatives could execute their attack.

People at the scene of the first explosion reported to have witnessed three victims who had succumbed to the explosion. Later, the Kenya Red Cross announced the death toll to have risen to four.

The scenes have now been cordoned off by security, medical and emergency personnel even as investigations continue. Confusion ensued earlier when members of the public agitated to get a glimpse of the scene but the security officers got the situation under control.

The blasts come at a time when the country is in a general state of alert due to increased terror attacks by the Al shabaab militants.
Any group is yet to claim responsibility for the attacks whose death tolls are feared to possibly rise.
