IEBC publicizes secret voter listing under pressure

22 May 2014

After secretly registering voters for over one month, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries  Commission (IEBC) on Wednesday bowed to pressure and publicized the process to stem rising suspicion.

The IEBC has said the exercise commenced on April 15 but has since claimed they lacked the funding required for publicization and did not release even mere press statements. After questions were raised by a parliamentary committee on the matter, they suddenly announced that the exercise was ongoing countrywide in all its 290 constituency offices.

On Tuesday, its vice-chairperson Mahiri Zaja revealed that voter registration had been going on for over a month, but made wild claims that they had no money for creating awareness about the exercise hence they had to do it secretly, or quietly as she put it.

Speaking to the Justice and Legal Affairs committee in Parliament, she also claimed that the turnout had been low because people were not aware of the listing.

All eligible voters are requested to register at their respective constituency offices.

More than 14 million out of 18 million Kenyans eligible for registration were listed in the last elections.
