Sheikh Mohamed Idris, chairman of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya, has been shot dead.
The Muslim cleric is said to have been on his way to a mosque near his home in Likoni, Mombasa when unknown assailants attacked and shot him dead.
His body has been taken to Pandya Memorial Hospital.
In December last year, Sheikh Idris and his counterpart Mohamed Khalifa narrowly escaped death after an attack at their mosque by more than 100 youths who were later repulsed by the police.
