A man suspected to have conned members of the public and solicited for money while impersonating Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi Sonko was on Monday charged in a Nairobi court.
Joseph Njoki allegedly created a Facebook page under the name Mike Sonko Foundation which he used to solicit funds from unsuspecting members of the public, in pretence of running the foundation.
He was arrested on July 24 by the Flying Squad officers after the Nairobi Senator reported the existence of the fake account.
Senior principal magistrate Elena Nderitu ordered that Njoki be remanded at Pangani police station for two days to allow police to conclude investigations.
Police officer Jared Onchiri filed an affidavit seeking to hold Njoki for investigations and told the court Njoki had crucial information which police believed would help to unravel other fake Facebook accounts that had been used in the past to con people.
According to the police, by the time of the arrest, Njoki had conned more than 3,000 unsuspecting people who allegedly sent him between Sh200 and Sh20,000.
The court heard that he committed the offence at an unknown location in Nairobi county on different dates this month. Njoki will be brought back to court on Friday when he is expected to take a plea. Sonko is also expected to testify during the hearing.
