One person died while five others got hospitalized in Kathama Location, Mwala district, Machakos county after allegedly consuming a lethal brews branded Maekin and another christened Gem Master.

Mwala OCPD, Joseph Kiragu Mugo said that the deceased, Antony Nzuki aged 44, along with two others had consumed the Maekin brand at a local pub in Kathama Market on Saturday before Antony succumbed to death in his house at around 3am Monday morning.

Antony's brother, Francis Nzuki aged 32, was hospitalized at Machakos level 5 Hospital alongside a friend, Muthini Mutune aged 54, the OCPD said, adding that a similar case of consuming another brew christened Gem Master had left two others hospitalized at Mwala district hospital.

Mugo said that those hospitalized were complaining of dizziness and low vision, and warned of the possibility that some of the pubs in the district were still selling the deadly brews, adding that they were going to mount repeated crackdowns in alcohol selling joints in the district to ensure that none was holding stocks of the brands.

In the May countrywide alcohol disaster that killed more than 80 people, Mwala recorded two deaths and was the only district in Machakos County to record deaths.

Mwala MP Vincent Musyoka on Monday threatened sue the Government for compensation of the victims if it failed to contain the situation. Musyoka also condemned the Kenya Bureau of standards for failing in its mandate to maintain standards hence putting lives at risk in the country.
