Kimaiyo resigns as Lenku gets sacked over country insecurity

2 Dec 2014

Interior Cabinet Secretary, Joseph Ole Lenku was on Tuesday sacked and promptly replaced with Retired Major General and Kajiado Central Member of Parliament, Joseph Nkaissery.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police, David Kimaiyo has tendered his resignation just hours after bloodbaths by suspected al Shabaab militants in Mandera and Wajir late Monday and early Tuesday morning. The attacks left at least 36 dead.

In an afternoon press briefing, Uhuru accepted Kimaiyo's resignation saying that he had resigned for personal reasons and thanked him for his service. He also announced Nkaissery's nomination.

The deadly Mandera attack came barely weeks after 28 people were killed when the bus they were traveling in was hijacked by armed gunmen in the same area.

Uhuru said the terror attacks were an attempt to drive Christians out of some parts of the country and asked the Muslim community to unite with other Kenyans in the fight against terror.

“Terrorists who kill in the name of Allah are neither Muslims nor religious in any way,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nkaissery told parliament that he was still a member of ODM despite his nomination to the Interior ministry.

He said he has to consult his constituents in Kajiado Central lightly adding that his work with both Jubilee and ODM MPs in the House will help his vetting.

Nkaissery started his military career in 1987 as a military assistant to the Chief of General Staff.
