The world joins Kenya in commemorating victims of the Garissa University Massacre

8 Apr 2015

Hundreds of people on Tuesday gathered at Uhuru Park's Freedom Corner Nairobi to commemorate the 147 victims killed by terrorists at the Garissa University College last week.

The vigil was organised by social activist Boniface Mwangi and those present lit candles to mourn the victims who were killed as the terrorists lay a 15 hour siege on the university complex.

The attendees carried 147 white crosses representing the victims who succumbed to terrorist weapons. They also held placards and printed material, some highlighting that the massacre was a result of increased corruption in the Kenyan government.

The vigil came after an early morning demonstration by university students in the capital, Nairobi. The students held peaceful protests against heightened terror and insecurity in the country.

Meanwhile, nations across across the world joined Kenya in commemorating the massacre victims, with the Kenyan embassy in Ireland announcing that it had opened a condolence book for the public.

Students at a Venezuelan institution reenacted one of the deadly massacre scenes as seen in a picture taken at the university.
