County embraces ICT with internet hotspot

Residents of Nakuru town are set to enjoy free Internet access in the next three weeks after Governor Kinuthia Mbugua commissioned a 10km-reach Internet hotspot.

This internet hub will benefit traders as well as schools intending to tap into online based services even as the town positions itself as Kenya’s first ‘Hotspot’.

Mr Mbugua made the remarks when he signed an agreement with the Statehouse Digital Team that will see Nakuru benefit from free Wi-Fi delivery, a website, an Android based mobile application worth Sh200 million.

Available Wi-Fi popularly referred to as Near Field Communications will boost the launch of online-based payments especially run on bank-based platforms with customers using their bank accounts to settle payments in restaurants, supermarkets and at fuel stations.

Speaking during the signing ceremony at the Governor’s chamber, director of Digital Media and Diaspora Communication Denis Itumbi said the partnership would also give a clear avenue for tapping, rewarding and developing the county’s innovations.

Mr Itumbi said five major towns would also benefit from the government’s digitalization programme, ahead of the official launch of the laptop programmes in schools.

Mr Mbugua said the county’s website would also give residents a platform to engage their leaders in various areas thereby improving services and ensuring they fully participate indevelopment decisions.
