Mombasa County Commissioner urged to stop politicizing security

25 Jul 2014

Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa has been urged to desist from circulating propaganda on security matters and instead facilitate conclusive investigations and arrests if he had the evidence. This was after he accused the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) of sponsoring a gun attack in Likoni, Mombasa county.

Former ODM Secretary-General Anyang’ Nyong’o rebuked the propaganda engineered to divert public attention from the government's remarkable failure to curb rising insecurity in the country.

“This is a calculated slander and disinformation that is in constant with what Ole Lenku said and if Marwa has any evidence of ODM being involved these evidence should have come out as early as when that allegation was made about four weeks ago.”

“I am not surprised that the propaganda still continues, but the Kenyan people know what the truth is,” Nyong’o said.

He noted that blaming the Opposition was not helpful in as far as securing Kenya was concerned and challenged the government to take responsibility for the country's security.

Marwa had earlier claimed that those who provided security at ODM rallies were responsible for attacks in Mombasa.

Professor Nyong'o did not however indicate whether they would take legal action against the administrator for slandering the party. “We don’t take knee jerk reactions, we are not a party that is bothered about stupidity,” he said.

Meanwhile, in a previous statement to newsrooms, Ole Lenku accused CORD of deceiving Kenyans into giving their signatures in support of the upcoming referendum. His statement was however retorted after it was revealed that CORD had not even started collecting signatures.

CORD on Wednesday unveiled four experts who were charged with guiding the process. CORD is expected to collect a million signatures for a referendum which will address various issues ailing the country. Among concerns to be addressed is the disbandment of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, insecurity and devolution.
