Twelve University of Nairobi students were charged in court on Thursday for threatening to use a gun, swords and pangas which they allegedly wanted to use to disrupt ongoing campaigns for students union leadership positions.
They were charged with preparing to commit a felony and for causing disturbance at their Lower Kabete campus on Wednesday.
The 12 who are Booker Ngesa Omole, Samwel Legira, Job Mandara, Benedict Wandeto, Oliver Kennedy Muriithi, Astagus Rayori, Jacob Opiyo Onono, Benrodger Nganu, Mwachi Mazden, Edward Otieno, Langat Keneth and Edwin Kemoi were accused of preparing to commit a felony and for causing a disturbance during campaigns for their student government.
“On April 9 along Parklands road in Westlands within Nairobi county…were found armed with dangerous weapons namely one Glock pistol serial Number RLU881, two kitchen knives, one sword and two pangas in circumstances that indicated that you were so armed with intent to commit a felony namely grievous harm,” the charge sheet read.
It continues to state that: “On April 9 at Lower Kabete campus within Nairobi County jointly created a disturbance in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by shooting in the air and threatening to cause bodily harm to students and other members of public.”
Booker Ngesa Omole who is a licenced gun holder and the owner of the said Glock was additionally charged with going armed in public contrary to Section 88 of the penal code.
“Booker Ngesa Omole on April 9 at Lower Kabete campus within Nairobi county armed in public without lawful occasion in such a manner as to cause terror to staff and students of lower Kabete campus.”
The 12 who remain in custody will be accorded a bail hearing on Friday.
