Two Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers were killed in the early hours of Monday after the convoy they traveling in was attacked by armed militants suspected to belong to the Al-Shabaab terrorist group.
Several other soldiers were reportedly injured during the heavy exchange of gunfire incident.
The soldiers were reported to have been transporting food from Hindi, near Lamu, to the Ras Kamboni military camp.
Lamu East OCPD Samuel Obara confirmed the reports that the two officers were killed by a group of about 10 militants who ambushed them. The incident, he said, occurred when the one KDF vehicle got stuck about 21 kilometers from Hindi. An exchange of fire occurred between the attackers and KDF leading to death of two officers and leaving others wounded.
The Al-shabaab militants appear to have increased their terrorist activities in recent times after their leader threatened to shift their war to Kenya.
