NTV banned for reporting on president

22 Jun 2014

Nation TV has been suspended indefinitely in Uganda for broadcasting images of the Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni that showed him dozing off during a Parliament session.

In defense, the government authorities stated that the president had been meditating and not dozing as had been implied. Such meditation, they said, was part of the president's habits.

The authorities have also maintained that NTV Uganda will remain suspended until it apologizes for the broadcast. They have accused the media house of causing mischief.

Last year, the Ugandan government shut down the Nation Media-owned Daily Monitor, the country’s most widely circulated independent newspaper, for more than a week after it reported about an alleged plot to assassinate anyone who opposed a plan for Museveni to be replaced by his son, Brigadier Muhoozi Kaneirugaba.
