Police on Sunday morning stormed Hope International Church linked to former Mungiki sect leader Maina Njenga and closed it down over what they called "security threats”.
It was reported that Isinya OCPD, Stephen Weda had directed Kitengela OCS, Joel Chepkwony to close church and secure the area for the next three days as they sought ways to reconcile Njenga with the locals who had vowed to burn down the church.
There was no resistance at the church after the presiding official was ordered the to close it down.
The official, Pastor Peter Maingi, who spoke to the police, told the church members who had already gathered to leave peacefully.
“I took their orders with the understanding that peace is paramount and every Kenyan must respect the rule of law,” said Maingi.
The closure of church comes only a day after GSU evicted more than 600 mourners from Njenga’s palatial home in Nkurrunka, Kitengela. The police said they stopped Grace Wairimu Nyambere's burial after it emerged that the local Maasai community residing in the area were opposed to her burial on the premises.
