Kisumu Court orders arrest of Raila's driver

10 Jul 2014

A court in Kisumu has issued a warrant of arrest against Raila Odinga’s driver Erick Ominde after he failed to appear before the court yesterday.

Ominde has been accused of robbery with violence and sexual assault, offenses he is said to have committed on July 5, 2014, in Kirembe area of Kisumu East district.

Last Saturday after the Cord rally in Kisumu, a confrontation ensued between security officers and Raila’s supporters at the Kisumu International Airport after police arrested Ominde on allegations of incitement.

Ominde had just dropped the former Prime Minister at the airport when CID officers pounced on him and attempted to take him into custody. He was arrested and handcuffed before Raila’s bodyguards and civilian onlookers forced the police to set him free.

Airport security officers and some of Raila's guards drew their guns, as a heated argument ensued.

Civilians and the public who joined the protracted disagreement shouted down the police forcing them to uncuff and release the driver.

At that moment Raila and other Cord leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang’ula, were in the VIP lounge.

The charge sheet read that Ominde robbed Nancy Sambaror of two Sony recorders, a Sony digital camera, a mobile phone and Sh7,500 cash. The value of cash and property taken from her is estimated at Sh74,500. Sambaror further claims that she was physically assaulted.

Ominde has also been charged with sexually assaulting Sambaror the same day, by lewdly touching her. Magistrate Samuel Atonga ordered the suspect arrested and arraigned in court on July 21 for mention of the case.
