Gender Commission faults Uhuru's political appointments

20 Aug 2014

The National Gender and Equality Commission has faulted President Kenyatta's appointment of new ambassadors.

Uhuru on Thursday appointed 20 people including Chirau Ali Mwakwere, Njeru Githae and Sheikh Dor to head Kenya's foreign missions.

The Gender Commission explained that out of the 20 appointees, none belong to the youth category, not a single nominee is a person with a disability and only five are women thus undermining the two-third gender principle.

"While the commission is cognizant that the appointments are bieng done progressively, we are disturbed that the indications so far appear to fly in the face of gender equality and inclusion principles especially for the women, youth and persons with disability and marginalised as espoused by the letter and spirit of the Constitution, " NGEC said.

The commission also urged the President to honour past declarations he made promising to support the empowerment of youth, women and persons with disabilities in key decision making organs.
