Residents of Bothai village, Ijara constituency, Garissa county today woke up to a tense atmosphere after armed assailants attacked an Administration police camp and torched a police vehicle and several houses.

According to one eyewitness, the attackers stormed the police camp at around midnight and sustained their assault for about five hours.

Police officers reportedly fled the camp after they were overpowered leaving the gunmen all the time to raid the rest of the village and steal drugs from the local dispensary and foodstuff from shops and houses.

The Garissa county security team has reportedly launched a manhunt for the gunmen who are believed to be hiding in the neighboring Boni forest.

This is the third time gunmen have attacked police post in Garissa county. Past attacks have left a number of police officers dead or kidnapped. The gunmen have also repeatedly made away with unknown number of firearms from the police posts.
