Four police officers were killed on Tuesday night after the driver of a speeding saloon car lost control and rammed a makeshift structure at a roadblock five kilometres from the Emali shopping centre.

The officers, three Administration and one regular police, were said to have been sheltering in the makeshift structure along the Nairobi-Mombasa road at the time of the accident.

Three of the deceased died on the spot while a fourth casualty succumbed to injuries as he was undergoing treatment at the Kilome Nursing Home in Emali.

According to the area police commander, Gregory Muganda, the police officers were manning a roadblock on the Emali-Oloitoktok road. He also said that another police officer sustained injuries during the accident and had consequently been transferred to Nairobi Hospital for specialized treatment.

The police commander added that seven injured occupants of the saloon car had been rushed to Kilome Nursing Home where they were admitted.

Meanwhile, when speaking from his hospital bed, the driver of the car alleged that he lost control of the vehicle after he swerved to avoid hitting a lorry that had been parked on the roadside.
