Garissa town residents took to the streets Thursday morning to protest against what they called rampant killings targeting non indigenous residents.
The demonstrations followed a 5am incident in which a loader was shot dead while three others were left seriously wounded by unknown assailants along Guleid road.
The demonstrators waved placards as they marched to the county commissioner’s office where they demanded to be addressed over the matter. They also lit bonfires and barricaded the road leading to the office.
“We want to know why we are being targeted in the killings. Where is the government while all this is happening. For how long will we continue losing lives,” asked one protester.
Addressing the demonstrators, Commissioner Rashid Khator urged them to be patient and promised to bring the killers to book.
Businesses remained closed for the better part of the day as owners feared possible looting.
The four victims of the early morning shooting incident were off-loading vegetables and cereals from a lorry when women armed with pistols stopped and started shooting indiscriminately, eyewitnesses narrated.
The three survivors were taken to Garissa provincial referral hospital with serious gun shot wounds.
Garissa OCPD Benjamin Ongombe said that attackers escaped after the incident.
Garissa town has in the recent months witnessed several deadly attacks.
