Vihiga county set to outlaw night clubs

2 Sept 2014

The Vihiga County Assembly has passed a bill to limit the sale of alcohol and ban nightclubs.

The Assembly Speaker Dan Chitwa is expected to forward the Vihiga County Alcoholic and Drinks Control Bill to Governor Moses Akaranga, to approve or decline.

If the bill is signed, Vihiga could be free of illicit and harmful drinks as national and county government officers will crackdown on illicit brewers and traders with harsh penalties for those found breaking the law.

The bill calls for a fine of not less than Sh150,000 or a jail term not exceeding five years or both.

Bars will be allowed to operate only from 5pm to 11pm on weekdays and from 2pm to 11pm on weekends and public holidays.

Those selling wines and spirits will open daily from 5pm to 8.30pm, while supermarkets and franchise retail chain stores distributing liquor will operate daily from 10am to 8.30pm.

All liquor distributors will be required to take their alcoholic beverages for inspection at the county laboratory to ensure they are safe for consumption.

However, the Bar Owners Association has complained that they do not know which department is mandated to licence liquor sales in the county.
