After arrogant accusations levelled at the opposition.and national leader Raila Odinga, the Al Shabaab insurgents have now released a statement claiming the Sunday night attacks on Mpeketoni, an area in Kenya's coastal town of Lamu. The attack left 48 people dead.
The terror group based in Somalia revealed that they razed down several hotels, a police station, a bank, vehicles in addition to the killings. The attack, they say is in retaliation to the recent killings of Muslim clerics at the coast.
“Al shabaab fully secured the town for 10 hours leaving a trail of destruction and scores dead,” reads the statement adding, “do not ever dream of living peacefully in your lands while your forces kill the innocent in our lands”.
The government through the security cabinet secretary had earlier pinned the attacks on Kenya's dominant opposition, CORD. One of the government's propagandists, Moses Kuria, had even posted inciting messages accusing the opposition leader Raila Odinga and suggesting that he should be placed under house arrest. The Interior Cabinet Secretary, Ole Lenku also seemed to place the blame squarely on the opposition in his characteristic careless manner. Ole Lenku also insinuated at using the attack as an excuse to clamp down on opposition rallies against the failed Kenyatta regime.
