Police in Mombasa have said that they have in custody the chief suspect behind last week’s killing of the Chairman of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya, Sheikh Mohammed Idris.
The suspect is said to have been found in possession of a pistol, hand grenade and four rounds of ammunition by detectives when he was apprehended in Likoni following a public tip off.
Area police boss Robert Mureithi said detectives had submitted the weapons for ballistics examination.
The suspect, Mohamed Sudi Mohamed, was on Monday arraigned in court where he denied charges of possessing a hand grenade on June 14 without authority in addition to being in possession of a firearm and four rounds of ammunition in contravention of the penal code. The court was also informed that the firearm and ammunition had recently been used in a manner prejudicial to public order.
The accused also denied two other charges of being in possession of 108 pieces of video discs for purposes of instigating a terrorist act and being a member of the Mombasa Republican Council.
Chief Magistrate Maxwell Gicheru ordered the accused to be remanded at the Likoni Police Station for 14 days and appear in court on June 30, when the case will be mentioned.
