Somalia's Al Shabaab insurgents on Saturday claimed full responsibility for the Friday attacks on a Lamu-bound bus and other vehicles near Witu. The attacks left at least seven dead with the death toll expected to increase.
The armed attackers reportedly blocked the road with their car late on Friday before killing the bus driver and spraying the bus with bullets.
They also attacked two lorries transporting mangos near Witu.
"The attack was in response to Kenya's claim that it deployed more troops in the coast and thus tightened security," Al shabaab spokesman, Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab told Reuters adding that, "Kenya also lied by saying it destroyed al Shabaab bases there -that is propaganda."
Al Shabaab has vowed to carry out more attacks in retaliation to Kenya's military invasion and continued presence in Somalia.
Armed raiders have so far killed about 100 people, including security personnel, in Lamu in the past one month alone.
The Al Shabaab terror group has claimed responsibility for nearly all the attacks although the government, including President Kenyatta, claim that local political networks were behind the attacks.
Frequent attacks in Lamu county, have taken a toll on Kenya's tourism industry and stirred up hostilities in a region where local communities have a history of conflict over land, water and other resources.
Hundreds of families have fled their homes in Lamu County despite government claims that the attacks will soon end.
