Intense gunfire was reported Saturday night at Hindi trading centre between Mpeketoni and Mokowe, 15km from Lamu. The attackers were not immediately identified.
The area chief, Abdalla Shahasi confirmed the reports saying that his office and that of the area DO were among the first to be attacked.
The attacks come at a time when the Deputy President is touring the Coast region and is expected to attend interfaith prayers in Mpeketoni today, Sunday.
In the neighbouring Tana Delta area, gunshots were also reported in an exchange of gunfire between the police and unknown assailants at Gamba police station on Lamu Malindi highway.
Gamba police post in Tana River County is about 100km from Hindi trading centre.
The attacks appeared to have been coordinated by the same group of attackers along the highway.
