Raiders attack Manda island in Lamu, burn hotel and homes

14 Jul 2014

Unidentified arsonists on Sunday night burned down a hotel and three houses in Manda Island, a day after gunmen raided a village in Pandanguo.

The attackers set a hotel that has been closed for years on fire at Ras Kitau in Lamu East. They also burned down two homes according to officials. However, no casualties were reported.

Ras Kitau is the location where British national David Tebbut was killed and his wife Judith kidnapped by suspected Al shabaab operatives in 2011.

Police visited the scene of the attacks which are now inching closer to Lamu Island a Kenyan tourist hub. Manda is also a key tourist destination in Lamu.

Police did not confirm whether the attacks were by the same group that has been terrorising residents of Mpeketoni, Witu and Pandanguo.

On Saturday night a gang raided Pandanguo village in Witu Division in Lamu West for the second time at around 11pm. The attackers broke several doors, harvested farm produce and disappeared with property of unknown value.
