Seven people among them four police officers and three passengers have been reported dead after gunmen attacked a Tahmeed bus near Witu in Lamu County at around 6:30pm on Friday.

The gunmen also opened fire on a police car that had stopped to intervene before reportedly hitting a third car.

Three of the policemen killed were said to have been Administration Police (AP) officers who had been on patrol in the area.

The driver of the Lamu-bound bus was reported to have been shot first before the attackers sprayed the bus with bullets.

According police, the death toll is expected to rise due to the number of those injured and others who escaped into the forest after the attack and who cannot be accounted for.

Eight people were reported injured in the incident, police indicated on Friday.

The injured included a policeman who was taken to Malindi hospital, about 117 kilometres away from the scene, to have a bullet lodged in his abdomen removed.

The gunmen were said to have  escaped into a nearby forest, according to Lamu County Commissioner Miiri Njenga.
