Kenya Red Cross suspends operations in Mandera after ambulances get attacked

The Kenya Red Cross Society today suspended its operations in Mandera after its vans and employees were attacked by armed gunmen responsible for the county's rising state of insecurity.

Making the announcement, the Society's Secretary General, Abass Gullet, said that they will only resume operations after the government intervened in the conflict that has so far left at least three dead and about 43 others injured.

“We have suspended our help in Mandera until the national government intervenes because our personnel have on several times been in danger by the warring communities,” he said.

Abbas said that on Sunday, 24 August, 2014, a Red Cross ambulance was attacked near Rhamu town in Mandera and its operators seriously wounded by the assailants.

“We cannot let our personnel be in danger as they try help the injured in Mandera as already two are recuperating in hospitals and our ambulance is now stalled,” he said adding that another Red Cross ambulance was today punctured by nails deliberately placed on the road.

The inter-clan conflicts in Rhamu town, Mandera County in Kenya's North-eastern region has been raging for the past four days.
