Senate committee recommends Kiala's impeachment

16 Aug 2014

The Senate Committee set up to investigate allegations against Machakos Deputy Governor Bernard Kiala has recommended that he be impeached.

Ten out of the 11 members of the committee voted for Kiala’s impeachment saying that the allegations against the deputy governor had been substantiated.

The committee found Kiala guilty of  gross violation of the National Integration and Cohesion act as well as abuse of office.

In a report submitted to the Senate Assembly on Friday, the committee recommended Kiala’s impeachment on those two grounds. The committee said that remarks by Kiala led to intimidation and harassment of medical staff at the Machakos level 5 hospital.

He is also  accused of causing a general state of fear of possible attacks, evictions or reprisals due to ethnic based tensions.

Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar was the only member who dissented against the committee’s resolution.

The Senate is currently discussing the committee's recommendations before taking a vote.
