ODM condemns heckling at presidential function

10 Sept 2014

The ODM party has condemned an incident on Monday in which youth heckled Migori Governor, Okoth Obado in the presence of President Kenyatta during a function in Migori town.

In a statement sent to newsrooms on behalf of the party, Professor Anyang Nyong’o wrote, “I have just watched the news regarding the fracas that occurred in Migori during the President's tour of the county today. On behalf of the ODM and the people of Kenya as a whole, I would like to condemn this type of behaviour and to plead with our people to always give the President the respect he deserves.”

The rowdy youth threw shoes and other objects towards the dais where the President and other guests were seated. They also chanted slogans in support of CORD leader Raila Odinga and the referendum.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and his Mombasa counterpart Hassan Joho are among Cord leaders who have also condemned the incident.

“I strongly condemn the chaos that marred the presidential and UN function in Migori yesterday,” Mombasa governor Hassan Joho said adding that, “We must all respect the institutions of the presidency, governorship and the entire leadership. I call for all Kenyans to exercise political tolerance across the divide and further urge all stakeholders to express their views using suitable platforms and in a decent and respectable manner. We could have different views but we are one nation.”
