The Inspector General of Police, David Kimaiyo has ordered the arrest of leaders behind chaos at the Makueni county assembly on Tuesday.
This is after five people, including Governor Kivutha Kibwana’s chief of staff were shot and wounded when chaos erupted at a meeting convened by a group of MPs allegedly plotting to impeach the governor.
News of Kibwana's possible impeachment spread fast and soon, his supporters thronged the meeting venue, baying for the blood of MPs, the senator, MCAs and women’s representative, who had reportedly locked themselves up in the speaker’s office.
Kibwana’s supporters tried to force the assembly gates open so he could enter the premises.
In the ensuing commotion, the speaker’s security aide and those assigned to the majority leader fired live bullets into the charging mob.
Kimaiyo has since directed Kibwana, Senator Mutula Kilonzo, MPs, MCAs and women’s leaders to record statements with the police.
Those injured include Kibwana’s bodyguard William Kinoti and Chief of Staff Douglas Mbilu.
Speaking in Mombasa, Kimaiyo said they were still investigating the shooting incidents.
Makueni leaders, including the speaker Stephen Ngelu and majority leader Francis Mutuku have since recorded statements with the police.
