Sauti Sol get to reclaim their glory with hit song, Sura Yako

13 Sept 2014

The Sauti Sol music group has finally managed to redeem some lost stripes after sustaining a good deal of public criticism over an explicit song video they called Nishike.

Apparently they are again performing cool hits that we can all listen to, watch and enjoy once more. After watching their failed Nishike video on YouTube, I must have jumped the gun and concluded that Sauti Sol was dead or something to that effect, as my lecturer likes quip.

Now, since last week when I travelled upcountry, my kid cousin had been pestering me to download this song, Sura Yako whenever she heard it play on Safaricom's Skiza tune commercial on TV. I'm not really a TV fan so mostly when it played, I had my headphones on, immersed in my own universe.

She be like, "Alfie, si uni-download-ie hiyo song." I be like, "Mmm... nani ameimba?" As I opened a new tab in my web browser and start typing "Sur..." But when she told me it had been done by Sauti Sol, I hesitated and immediately closed the entire browser.

The song felt great, but the name behind it got me thinking to myself, "Probably only the chorus is good. It could be just another Nishike shenzi type song."

I finally succumbed to pressure last night and downloaded the song after watching it on YouTube. Is the song great!

With the sure hit song, Sura Yako, it appears Sauti Sol is now recovering from whatever 'mental illness' that made them believe they could dominate airwaves, by parading cubes, biceps and much oiled skins. Come on, leave nude clips to our so called socialites. You are performing and recording artistes for music's sake!

I'm happy to note that Sauti Sol must have learnt that originality and creativity is essential for their continued success.

Sura Yako is a well thought creative piece. The Lipala dance video is just Wow! for lack of a better word. Please pardon my limited vocabulary. The dance move is original and something I'd love to try. I'm not good at dancing and my best attempt at a dance was only when some crawly, slithery creature got into my shirt a few years back. So I'll probably try it while locked up in my room.

The video is a departure from Nishike which appeared to have been a cut-paste idea from some Niki Minaj video or a crap loaded porn site.

Sura Yako, will undoubtedly top music charts, for a while. And I'm now seriously considering being a Sauti Sol fan once again after I withdrew when they let me down with the explicit Nishike video.

Hats off to Sauti Sol!
