Nairobi students blame Kenyatta National Hospital for colleague's death

26 Feb 2015

Students Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU) secretary general Babu Owino has accused Kenyatta National Hospital of neglecting a student who died at the facility on Monday.

Owino said Washington Mwangi, a Bachelor of Science third year student, was hit by a speeding matatu on University Way on Sunday afternoon and rushed to KNH for treatment.

On Tuesday night, the University of Nairobi students staged a demonstration when they heard Mwangi had died.

“The students were demonstrating against the doctors who did not act fast to save Mwangi's life,” the student leader is reported to have said.

He said by Monday  afternoon, Mwangi had not been attended to apart from the first aid done to him by the nurses.

The situation normalised at about 9.30pm when anti-riot police lobbed teargas and shot live bullets in the air to disperse the students.

Police urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads.
