constitution. Retired president Moi was steadfast in arguing that Majimbo would deepen tribal and ethnic sentiments to the detriment of nationhood. Well, devolution is now a fact in Kenya and it is interesting to watch the making of the counties.
The Good
Machakos: Without a doubt, Dr. Alfred Mutua is doing an amazing job in Machakos. In May,
shortly after his inauguration, he hosted a three day investment forum that raised 56.3 billion for the county. This idea was taken up by other counties.
He then embarked on infrastructure projects where we have seen him inspecting the
construction of county roads. He has hosted
numerous delegations from within and as far as Dubai and send county staff to familiarization tours to various places around the world.
Most importantly, he made a decision to build a new city that will meet the challenges of the future.
Further, he has set up various boards to oversee the functioning of the county. We salute you Dr. Alfred Mutua and wish you the best as you make Machakos "The Place to Be"
The Bad
The push for increased pay for the County Ward Reps (CWRs) has been going on now for over four months. The Salaries and Renumeration Commission (SRC) yesterday reiterated that CWRs will not be getting any more money something that has angered them and they have vowed to paralyze operations at the counties until they get more money. Isn't sad that people use leadership for personal gain? How shameful and is there hope of making Kenya a better place for all?
Makueni: The county governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana was stresses by members of the County Assembly, again on account of money, to the point of resigning only to turn around and declare that he will continue to serve.
The Bad
Kiambu: Govenor William Kabogo has proposed new charges for dying for human beings and animals. The old charges have been revised upwards and new charges introduced.
For instance, there is a charge if you die outside the county as well as a separate charge for non-citizens and a charge for slaughtering animals and poultry in private homes within Kiambu County. Can it get worse than this: taxing people for dying?
Evidently, making of counties is the making of a new Kenya. As to how it will look like, your guess is as good as mine.
