The government has been challenged to merge the provincial administration with the county governments to reduce the huge wage bill burdening the economy.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga said this was the only way to save the taxpayers’ money as he dismissed last week’s 20 and 10 per cent for the President and his deputy and the Cabinet respectively as populist gesture. He said Kenyans voted for the current Constitution to send the provincial administrators home.
“Their work was over at that time when we promulgated the Constitution,” he said in Luanda,Vihiga County at the weekend in the company of Budalang’i MP Ababu Namwamba.
Mr Namwamba said the provincial administrators presented a structural problem to governance in the country and amounted to duplication of roles at the grassroots.
He added: “We now have the county administrators in the name of village, ward and sub-county administrators. The government should deal with this structural defect before beginning to convince Kenyans through populist measures of pay cuts at the top.”
