Former Mungiki leader wounded, five dead in gun attack

Five people were on Saturday killed during a gun attack that left former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga wounded in Nyahururu.

According to witnesses at the scene of the attack, Njenga was in a convoy along the Nyahururu-Oljororok Road when men in a speeding vehicle caught up with them and sprayed the convoy with bullets.

Five of those who were reported killed are said to have been in the vehicle Njenga was travelling in during the attack that occurred at about 1 pm.

Njenga was soon after transferred to Nairobi for emergency treatment for the injuries he sustained during the attack. The former Mungiki leader is reported to have been wearing a bulletproof vest.

Police in Nyahururu have confirmed the reports, but could not immediately establish the identity of the attackers or their motive. They said their were looking for the attackers and investigating on their motive.
