Illicit brew mystery deepens as 57 people die

At least 57 people have so far died after consuming an illicit brew in the counties of Kitui and Kiambu.

The latest cases of such deaths were reported in Kiambu where the merry makers died after drinking the brew in Kawamwaki village, Limuru, in central Kenya.

On Tuesday, five deaths were reported under similar circumstances while scores were admitted to hospital after consuming an illegal drink dubbed Countryman Beer. The unfortunate incident occurred in Ikutha district, Kitui County.

Other cases of deaths due to the illicit brews were reported in Embu where residents succumbed to death after indulgence.

Limuru Deputy County Commissioner Kang’ethe Thuku and area Member of the County Assembly John Kaniaru confirmed the deaths from the consumption of the brew suspected to have been laced with methanol.

The Limuru victims are said to have been drinking the alcohol Monday evening in a forested area surrounded by tea farms.

According to Ikutha medical officer of health Lucia Jonah, seven other revellers are admitted in critical condition while 19 were treated at the nearby dispensary and discharged after their conditions stabilised.

Two died at the bar, one at his home while two more succumbed to stomach complications at Mutomo Mission Hospital where they had been referred.

In Embu, the death toll rose to 18 Tuesday, with more than 40 admitted to hospital in critical condition.

Among those dead in Kitui include the bar owner.
