Witnesses in a small Kenyan town where gunmen killed nearly 50 people overnight say the attackers gave residents religion and language tests before slaughtering those who gave incorrect answers.
The witnesses said Monday that the gunmen refused to spare residents who weren't Muslim or didn't speak Somali. Similar kinds of religion tests were given by gunmen who attacked Nairobi's Westgate Mall last year.
Witness Anne Gathigi said the attackers came to her house and killed her husband when he said the family was Christian.
Resident John Waweru said his two brothers were killed because the attackers did not like that the brothers did not speak Somali.
The gunmen attacked the town of Mpeketoni, near the Somali border, for hours, suggesting there was little or no response by security forces.
