Governor Evans Kidero this evening retracted his earlier statement banning alcohol at the upcoming Safaricom Kabeberi 7s event scheduled for Saturday at Railways Club.
In a statement released late Thursday, Kidero said the consumption of alcohol would not be completely banned at the event's venue but instead called for controlled and responsible alcohol consumption to protect young rugby fans.
Kidero also said that although his government recognized the contribution of breweries to the country’s GDP and creating employment opportunities, it was the county’s responsibility to protect the health and well-being of Nairobi residents, sports fans and their families by promoting an alcohol free sporting environment.
The Nairobi county government has directed that any alcohol consumption at the event be restricted to specific areas and no sale of alcohol will occur after 6pm.
Enforcement officers will be deployed to ensure those attending the event complied with the directives.
During an earlier press conference at City Hall Thursday morning, Kidero was quoted to have said, "No one will be allowed in the stadium with alcohol, no one will be allowed to drink in their cars and alcoblow devices will be stationed around the pitch to check those drinking."
