Leaders in Mombasa have called for the regulation of miraa trade in the county to control the use of the stimulant saying that its had negatively impacted development in the region.
Led by Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi, the leaders raised concerns over the high number of youths using miraa with the MP vowing to push for the banning of miraa transport to Mombasa.
Speaking in Mombasa at treasury squares during the Eid Baraza organised by Governor Hassan Joho on Tuesday, Mwinyi said miraa chewing had led to poverty and family break-ups.
“If possible, we don’t want miraa to come to Mombasa. This is a disaster that has misled our people for 50 years and majority of them being youths. It has cost us a lot in terms of development and family values,” Mwinyi said.
He lamented that youths wasted much of their time chewing miraa instead of engaging in income generating activities.
His sentiments were echoed by Jomvu MP Badi Twalib, who said drugs and stimulants were a major impediment to development and productivity in the region.
