Baringo residents succumb to starvation as drought bites

4 Aug 2014

On Sunday, two people succumbed to hunger in Amaya village, Baringo County after going for several days without food and water due to a prolonged drought that has left over 30,000 people facing starvation in the county.

Confirming the incidents, Amaya Location Chief Samson Kana said another hunger victim Kuku Nyaliambich aged 60 was bedridden and in critical condition due to extreme starvation.

Kana said that over 3,000 residents were facing starvation after relief food supplied last month by the County Government of Baringo ran out of stock.

He also appealed to the county, national government and well-wishers to supply foodstuffs to arrest the situation that has been projected to get worse.

Baringo County Deputy Governor Engineer Mathew Tuitoek who chairs the Disaster Management committee said that although the county was yet to benefit from the equalization fund from the national government, they had set aside Sh80 million in the 2014/2015 budget for disaster emergencies.
