Chaos on Thika Superhighway as residents protest alleged land grabbing

9 Aug 2014

Tension was high earlier today when several members of youth groups and community based organizations blocked the Thika Superhighway protesting alleged land grabbing.

The accused land developer apparently hired police officers and workmen early Saturday morning and started fencing off a 15 acre piece of land at the Zimmerman settlement scheme. The land in question is close to Clay City on the Thika Superhighway near Githurai 45.

The protesters lit bonfires and blocked sections of the superhighway causing major traffic snarl-ups and forcing some motorists to seek alternative routes.

Zimman settlement scheme Chairman Francis Kirima has maintained that the land is a public utility.

"If the developer has genuine documents why hire police to guard him to fence his land. This is abuse of public resources," Kirima said.
