Education CS wants universities to stop offering Diploma and Certificate courses

Education Cabinet Secretary, Jacob Kaimienyi wants universities to stop offering diploma and certificate programmes.

Kaimenyi has said he will introduce an amendment to the The Universities Act 2012 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training Act 2013 to restrict universities to only offer degree and post-graduate diploma courses.

“When we were coming up with these Acts, we had put in a proposal barring universities from offering diploma and certificate courses, but Parliament in its wisdom amended it, allowing the universities to continue offering the programmes,” Kaimenyi said while speaking on the sidelines of a graduation ceremony for 500 artisans at the Kenya Technical Teachers College.

The two Acts saw the creation of the Commission for University Education to supervise degree and post-graduate diploma programmes.
