The former Mungiki sect leader, Maina Njenga has asked the government to arrest members of outlawed groups which the government claims have been enlisted by Cord to cause chaos in the country.
“What I am saying as a Church leader is the government should move with speed and arrest those it alleges to be Mungiki sect members hired by Cord leaders and arraign them in court. The same government should also arrest those it claims are MRC members hired to cause chaos in Kenya,” Mr Njenga said.
Njenga said he left Mungiki many years ago and that no one had approached him for assistance in causing violence or mayhem.
He also said that Cord leader, Raila Odinga was his neighbour in Karen Nairobi but had never asked him to support the activities planned for Saba Saba adding that if the Cord leader asked for his backing for the Monday demonstrations, he would never agree to it.
“Interior Secretary Joseph ole Lenku should be directing the Inspector General of Police to act on those bent on causing mayhem instead of issuing statements that cause fear in people,” Njenga said.
Speaking in the presence of Hope International Ministries Church members including Bishop Johnson Fundi Mwai, Njenga likened Lenku’s statement to that of the former Internal SecurityMinister John Michuki when he ordered the killing of members of the outlawed Mungiki sect which led to extra-judicial killings of youth in Nairobi and Kiambu.
He said it is wrong for the government to issue statements that create fear.
“We do not want to go back to the dark days of the Michukis. Statements such as those of Lenku and Deputy President William Ruto on the presence of Mungiki sect members are misleading and our fear is that the government may use them to bring another anarchy to the nation,” he said.
Njenga called on the Kikuyu Council of Elders to advise youths to leave outlawed sects and obey the laws of the country.
