China to bring in 5,000 foreign workers for standard gauge railway project

7 Aug 2014

Kenya Railway Corporation (KRC) managing director Atanas Maina has said that China Road and Bridge Corporation will bring in 5,000 workers from China to work on the standard gauge railway.

Mr Maina also said they had commenced discussions to reduce the project timeline and ensure it is completed by 2017.

Work on the first phase of the railway project, set to cover 609km from the port of Mombasa to Nairobi is expected to start in September. This is after a frosty start riddled with allegations of corruption. Parliament however approved the project allowing it to proceed.

The first phase of the project will cost $3.6 billion (Sh314.2 billion). 90 per cent of the financing will come from China Exim Bank while Kenya will cover the remaining 10 per cent.
