Rogue police shoot at anti-corruption officers to escape bribery charge

7 Aug 2014

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission officers escaped death when rogue police officers manning Mariakani Weighbridge shot at them during an anti-bribery operation.

EACC detectives attempted to arrest four armed police officers manning the Mariakani weighbridge when two of the officers resisted arrest and fired at the EACC officials forcing them to retreat.

Although nobody was injured, EACC lodged a complaint with the Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo, who promised that the two will be arrested and charged.

Nineteen police officers and civilian staff found taking bribes were arrested at Mariakani and Mlolongo Weighbridges and will be charged in court.

The operation was a culmination of four months of undercover investigations by EACC detectives assisted by a private enforcement firm, SGS, on weighbridges on the Northern Corridor.

Yesterday's sting operation however targeted Mlolongo and Mariakani weighbridges. EACC recovered Sh86,000, banking slips and evidence of mobile money transfers on phones belonging to the officers.

EACC says that it unearthed rampant corruption at weighbridges with an average of 100 trucks passing through without being weighed after parting with between Sh1,000 and Sh3,000.

The investigation established that officers manning weighbridges collect at least Sh300,000 each day from the five weighbridges on the Northern Corridor. The four-month undercover operation established that the bribes are delivered to the officers by brokers.
